DEFENSIVE DRIVING

Defensive Driving is best described as; to save lives, time and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.

Defensive Driving is a form of training for motor vehicle drivers that goes beyond mastery of the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving. Its aim is to reduce the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others. This can be achieved by adhering to a variety of general rules, as well as the practice of specific driving techniques.

Roadcraft

Dragon City Driver Training trains all drivers utilizing the principles of Roadcraft. Basically it is all about being in the right place at the right time, in the right gear and at the right speed.

Roadcraft can be described in five stages:
Information – Position – Speed – Gear – Accelleration

Information- received from the outside world by observation, and given by use of signals such as direction indicators, using your horn where applicable is a general theme running continuously throughout the application of the system by taking, using and giving information.

Position – on the road optimized for safety, visibility, correct route, followed by best progress.

Speed – appropriate to the hazard being approached, and is attained by braking, using gears, and always being able to stop in the distance that you can see to be clear on your side of the road.

Gear – appropriate for maximium vehicle control through the hazard.

Accelleration - is appropriate for clearing the Hazard safely.

HAZARDS

A hazard is something which requires a change in speed, direction or both.

The system is used whenever a hazard requires a manoeuvre.

The benefit of applying a systematic approach to driving is to reduce the simultaneous demands on the vehicle, the driver mentally and the driver physically. That is the system seeks to separate out the phases of the manoeuvre into a logical sequence so that the vehicle and the driver avoid being overwhelmed by having to do too much at the same time. Braking and steering at the same time place greater demands on the vehicles available grip, and in the worst case, can lead to a skid and loss of control of the vehicle.
